According to Alpha Phi Alpha: A Development in College Life, by Dr. C. H. Wesley, the Chapter was organized on November 28, 1915 by men who were, "in the main members of other Chapters who were pursuing studies at Boston University, Tufts College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Suffolk Law School, Northeastern University, and Harvard University."

The founders of Sigma Chapter, much like the Seven Jewels, come from strong backgrounds. Of the Seven Founders of Sigma Chapter, three have historical significance to the fraternity: M. Walker Clair, Jr. was a charter member of Iota Chapter (Syracuse, 1910); Aiken A. Pope was a member of the same Zeta Chapter (Yale) initiation class that included celebrated historian Dr. Charles Harris Wesley in 1913; and Franklin A. Myers, the only Sigma Chapter Founder pictured in the Alpha Phi Alpha history book, was among the charter members of Nu Chapter (Lincoln University, 1912).
